Metal Slug 5 is a 2003 side-scrolling run-and-gun game developed and published by SNK Playmore. As a mainline arcade entry in the long-running series, it keeps the fast mission-based shooting, expressive pixel art, and explosive set pieces the franchise is known for, while adding the Slide Move and new Slug vehicles. Players fight the mysterious Ptolemaic Army through intense stages, rescuing prisoners, collecting weapons, and confronting large bosses. It is generally remembered as a solid, action-heavy continuation of the series formula.

The game uses a side-scrolling perspective and supports solo play or two-player co-op. Players attack with a default handgun and can collect heavy machine guns, shotguns, rocket launchers, and other weapons. Core actions include jumping, grenade throwing, knife attacks, and the new slide maneuver for slipping under certain attacks. Stages are built around waves of enemy soldiers, vehicles, set-piece hazards, and a boss at the end. Rescued prisoners grant items, weapons, or score bonuses, and several Slug vehicles can be driven for extra firepower and protection. Progress depends on learning enemy spawn points and boss patterns.

Marco Rossi

One of the series' signature heroes, known for direct assaults and heavy combat skill.

Tarma Roving

A regular army soldier who often partners with Marco on dangerous missions.

Eri Kasamoto

A playable heroine recognized for her skill with explosives and field combat.

Fio Germi

A regular army member with strong technical ability and combat support experience.

Use the slide carefully to pass under low attacks and move through tight danger zones, but remember it has recovery time. Rescue prisoners whenever possible because they often provide valuable weapons and score items. Save stronger weapons such as rockets or heavy machine guns for boss encounters and dense enemy formations. Most enemy waves appear from fixed positions, so repeated practice and route knowledge greatly improve survival. When using a Slug vehicle, take advantage of its special attack and avoid staying inside just before it explodes.

Memorizing spawn locations is one of the best ways to avoid getting overwhelmed.

Tips

Do not overuse the slide in crowded areas where recovery can leave you exposed.

Tips

Try to enter boss fights with a high-damage weapon whenever possible.

User Reviews

Fast, loud, and still very satisfying, especially with two players.

User Reviews

It may be shorter than some earlier entries, but the animation and action remain excellent.
