Renegade is a 1986 arcade beat 'em up developed by Technos Japan and published by Taito. Set in a gritty urban underworld, it sends the player through gangs and street fights to rescue a kidnapped girlfriend. With its side-scrolling progression, close-range combat, and stage-based structure, it helped define the template for later brawlers and remains an important early action title in arcade history.

The game uses a side-scrolling view as the player advances through alleys, stations, and gang hideouts. The hero can punch, kick, jump-kick, grapple, and throw enemies, while some stages provide melee weapons. Enemies attack from both sides, so positioning and timing are essential. Each stage builds toward tougher multi-enemy encounters and boss fights, and survival depends on managing spacing, using throws effectively, and avoiding being surrounded.

Unnamed protagonist

The leather-jacketed hero who fights through the city to rescue his kidnapped girlfriend.

Kidnapped girlfriend

The rescue target whose abduction drives the story forward.

Use jump-kicks and throws to control groups and avoid being trapped. Against weapon users, close the gap carefully and interrupt them before they can swing freely. In boss fights, stay mobile, bait attacks, and punish recovery windows rather than trading blows.
