Rampage, developed by Midway and published by Activision, is a monster-destruction action game built around simple, chaotic fun. Players choose George the gorilla, Lizzie the lizard, or Ralph the wolf and tear through city skylines, smashing buildings and fighting off military forces. The NES version arrived in 1988 and became memorable for its outrageous premise and cooperative play.

The game uses side-scrolling city stages where the monsters climb buildings, punch through walls, and topple entire structures for points. Players can attack civilians and military units, but must also manage health while dodging tanks, helicopters, and soldiers. Each stage usually ends after enough damage is dealt to the city, then the action moves to a new location with increased pressure. On NES, two players can cooperate and split targets to clear stages faster.

George

A giant gorilla with quick movement and solid climbing ability.

Lizzie

A giant lizard with strong attacks and aggressive close-range damage.

Ralph

A giant wolf who offers a balanced mix of mobility and destruction.

Focus on upper floors to bring buildings down faster and rack up damage efficiently. Use the edges of buildings and vertical movement to avoid being trapped by tanks and helicopters. Eat falling civilians when health gets low, but don’t stay exposed in open ground for too long. In multiplayer, divide the city blocks between both players to speed up clearing.
