The game is played from a side-scrolling perspective. At the start, players may choose any of the eight Robot Master stages. Mega Man can run, jump, and fire his arm cannon, then gain each boss's special weapon after victory. Stage hazards include moving platforms, pits, enemies, and mid-stage checkpoints. After defeating the first eight bosses, the player advances to Dr. Wily's fortress, where several consecutive stages and boss battles must be cleared. Energy Tanks provide stored healing and add an important resource-management layer.
