Players control Sonic through side-scrolling stages built around speed, jumps, slopes, springs, and enemy bumps. Each act ends at a goal marker or a boss encounter, with branching paths and hidden routes encouraging replay. Rings serve as health, and collecting 100 grants an extra life. Special stages are accessed by finding the hidden entrance and meeting the ring requirement, where the six Chaos Emeralds can be earned.
