Gradius II

The game uses a horizontal scrolling view, with the player piloting Vic Viper through stages packed with enemy craft, turrets, and large bosses. Destroying specific enemies drops power capsules that can be used to advance through the power-up meter for speed, missiles, double shots, options, and shields. Success depends on route memorization, careful movement, and managing firepower, since losing a life often costs a large part of your weapon setup. The NES version preserves the core Gradius structure while adjusting weapons and pacing for the hardware.

Upgrade speed and basic firepower first, then add a shield when the stage gets dangerous. Learn enemy spawn points so you can clear turrets and blockers before they overwhelm the screen. Most bosses have fixed patterns, so staying at a controlled mid-range makes dodging easier. If you lose power, rebuild in safe sections before pushing into the next heavy-fire area.

Tips and tricks

• Keep the power-up meter in rhythm instead of spending everything at once.
• Press close to turrets for faster clears, but always leave yourself an escape route.
• Against large bosses, target firing ports and core weak points first.
