The game uses a top-down exploration map and turn-based battles. Players travel across Johto, capture wild Pokémon, train a team, and challenge eight Gyms to advance the story. Time of day affects encounters, events, and some evolution or item conditions. Battles revolve around type matchups, move selection, and status effects. After the main story, players can also visit the Kanto region for additional progression.

Characters
Player
The trainer controlled by the player, aiming to become the Champion and complete the Pokédex.
Professor Oak
The well-known researcher who supports Pokédex-related progress and appears in the broader story.
Silver
A mysterious rival who repeatedly tests the player throughout the journey.
Team Rocket
The returning criminal organization that drives several major conflicts in the plot.
Strategy
Build a balanced team with good type coverage rather than relying on one strong Pokémon. Take advantage of the day/night cycle to catch Pokémon you might miss at other times, and use rematches for steady experience and money. Before major Gym battles, stock up on healing items and make sure you have moves that can answer common type threats. Prepare specifically for the Elite Four with status recovery and coverage moves.

Tips
Tips and tricks
- Keep one or two Pokémon with utility moves so you can handle difficult situations outside battle.
- If you want to complete the Pokédex, revisit routes at different times of day.
- Saving before new areas or key battles helps avoid losing progress to bad matchups.
