The game uses an overhead exploration map and turn-based combat. Players travel between towns, routes, caves, and gyms, catching wild Pokémon, building a balanced party, and leveling up through battles. Pokémon can learn moves, hold items, evolve, and be bred or trained for different roles. Beyond the main story, players can challenge gym leaders, the Pokémon League, battle facilities, and link features with HeartGold for trades and battles.

Player character

The customizable trainer controlled by the player on a journey through Johto.

Clair

The Dragon-type Gym Leader of Blackthorn City and a major obstacle in the Johto challenge.

Silver

A recurring rival character known for his hostile attitude and frequent battles against the player.

Giovanni

A major villain linked to Team Rocket and a key figure in the late-game story arc.

Lance

A powerful member of the Elite Four and the Champion-tier opponent representing the endgame challenge.

Build a team with strong type coverage early, rather than relying on one overleveled starter. A fast attacker and a reliable water, flying, or ground-type partner will make most gym battles easier. Save valuable evolution items and TMs for key team members, and keep healing items ready before difficult fights. Use status effects and type advantages to control tougher opponents.

No cheats or unlockables available

Tips

Keeping a Pokémon with key field moves can reduce backtracking and party swapping.

Tips

After reaching Kanto, enemy levels rise quickly, so it helps to have a second team member ready for support.
