The game uses an overhead exploration view for towns, dungeons, and world maps across different eras. Battles use the Active Time Battle system, with enemies visible on the field instead of random encounters. Positioning matters for line and area attacks, and party members can combine abilities into dual and triple techs. Progression centers on time travel, key items, character side quests, and branching endings. The DS version adds the Dimensional Vortex, Lost Sanctum, and the Arena of the Ages.

Crono

The silent main protagonist, a swordsman who uses lightning-based techniques.

Marle

The princess of Guardia, skilled with bows and healing abilities.

Lucca

A brilliant inventor who uses guns and fire magic.

Robo

A robot from the future with strong physical attacks and support skills.

Frog

A cursed knight transformed into a frog, proficient with swords and water techniques.

Ayla

A prehistoric warrior known for speed and powerful unarmed attacks.

Magus

A mysterious and powerful sorcerer deeply connected to Lavos.

In the early game, prioritize healing for Marle and multi-target damage for Lucca to make dungeons safer. Watch enemy formations closely and use dual or triple techs whenever positioning allows. For sealed chests, leaving them unopened in the past and opening them later can yield improved versions. In the second half, complete character side quests to gain top-tier equipment and fuller story payoffs. Before facing Lavos, bring party-wide healing, status recovery, and high-damage combo techs.
