Pokémon HeartGold Version

The game uses overhead exploration and turn-based battles. Players travel across Johto as a new Trainer, catch Pokémon, build a party of up to six, defeat eight Gym Leaders, and challenge the Pokémon League. After the main story, Kanto becomes available with more Gyms and late-game content. Battles rely on type matchups, moves, abilities, held items, and party balance. Side activities include breeding, Pokédex completion, leveling, minigames, and Battle Frontier-style challenges, while the lead Pokémon visibly follows the player in the field.

Player Character

A young Trainer chosen by the player who begins the journey from New Bark Town.

Ethan / Lyra

The male and female protagonist designs available at the start of the adventure.

Professor Elm

A Pokémon researcher in Johto who gives the player a starter Pokémon and a Pokédex task.

Silver

The player's recurring rival, known for his harsh attitude and strong focus on power.

Ho-Oh

The version mascot Legendary Pokémon and a major symbol of HeartGold's story.

Build early type coverage instead of relying on a single favorite Pokémon. Johto's level curve can feel slow, so battle optional trainers, use rematches, and take advantage of the Exp. Share when available. Keep at least one Pokémon that can handle required field moves to reduce backtracking. Before each Gym, review the Leader's main type and prepare status moves or resistances. For the postgame, rebalance your team for Kanto and stock recovery items before longer routes and tougher boss fights.

Collect all eight Kanto Badges and head to Mt. Silver

Unlock Mt. Silver and its final high-level trainer battle.

Advance the story and meet the required conditions

Encounter and capture Ho-Oh during the main adventure.

Tips and tricks

• Avoid stacking too many Pokémon with overlapping weaknesses if you want smoother Gym progress.
• Following Pokémon are mostly cosmetic, but they add charm and extra interaction during exploration.
• Use breeding, trading, and time-based encounters to fill more of the Pokédex efficiently.
