The game uses a side-scrolling view, but its stages are designed around semi-open exploration. As Wario advances, he gains new abilities and transformations such as flight, swimming, shrinking, or condition-based changes that unlock previously inaccessible routes. Each stage usually contains keys, switches, hidden rooms, and treasure collectibles, with some puzzles only solvable after returning later with new powers.
