Pokémon Green Version

The game uses an overhead viewpoint for exploration and random encounters in grass, caves, and water areas. Wild Pokémon can be weakened and caught with Poké Balls, while trainer battles unfold in turn-based combat using moves, items, switching, or fleeing. Progress comes from collecting eight Gym Badges, using HM abilities to overcome field obstacles, and eventually defeating the Elite Four and Champion. Raise one dependable core battler early, then support it with teammates covering key weaknesses. Inflicting Sleep or Paralysis greatly improves catch rates on wild Pokémon. Avoid loading too many HM moves onto your main fighters; keep at least one utility team member. Fight trainers for steady money and experience, and stock Antidotes, Potions, and Poké Balls often. Before the Elite Four, train your main team to solid levels and bring plenty of recovery items.

Tips and tricks

• Buy extra Poké Balls early, since some useful species are uncommon and may not reappear quickly.
• Type matchups matter heavily in Generation I; Electric-, Water-, and Psychic-type Pokémon are often especially effective.
• Caves and dungeons can be long, so carry status cures and an Escape Rope before entering.
