Q*bert is a 1982 arcade action-puzzle game developed and published by Gottlieb. Players guide the orange, snouted hero across an isometric pyramid of cubes, hopping to change each block’s color while avoiding enemies and hazards. Its striking pseudo-3D presentation, memorable sound effects, and unusual controls helped make it one of the most recognizable arcade titles of the early 1980s.

The game uses a single-screen, isometric board. Using the joystick, the player moves Q*bert diagonally across the cube pyramid; each landing changes a cube’s color, and the stage is cleared when every cube matches the target color. Later stages add more enemies, bouncing balls, and moving threats, forcing careful route planning and quick reactions. Falling off the pyramid or touching enemies costs a life, while score and stage progression continue to build across rounds.

Q*bert

The main character, a small orange creature with a long nose and springy legs, who changes cube colors by jumping.

Plan efficient routes from the top or edges of the pyramid so you do not box yourself in. When enemies appear, prioritize survival over chasing the last few cubes. Early-stage speed helps, but later boards reward patience, route control, and awareness of where escape jumps remain available.
