The game uses a top-down overworld and turn-based battles. Players travel through towns, routes, caves, and facilities, encountering wild Pokémon and trainer battles along the way. A party of up to six Pokémon can be managed, leveled up, evolved, and taught new moves. Core systems include Gym progression, item management, breeding at the Day Care, and time-based events tied to the internal clock. After defeating the League, the player can explore Kanto and challenge additional gyms.
