The game uses a side-view 2D one-on-one fighting format. Players win through timed rounds by combining light and heavy punches and kicks, throws, evasive movement, and special attacks. Compared with earlier entries, it places greater emphasis on spacing, counter hits, and combo confirmation. Each character plays differently, with some built for close-range pressure and others for long-range control, so positioning and meter management are central to success.

Robert Garcia

A Kyokugen-style martial artist who excels at fast pressure and mid-range attacks.

Ryo Sakazaki

One of the series' lead characters, known for powerful karate and solid close-range offense.

Kasumi Todoh

A flexible fighter who relies on throws, counters, and technical movement.

Yuri Sakazaki

A mobile fighter with varied kicks and quick offensive strings.

Learn each character's effective range and startup frames before trying to rush in. Against throw-heavy opponents, use short hops, back movement, and long pokes to break their rhythm. If your character has strong super damage, save meter for confirmed hits instead of throwing out unsafe specials.

Test the opponent with safe mid-range normals before committing to an approach.
Avoid repeating the same jump-in or wake-up option too often; good players will read it.
Keep meter for key confirmed damage rather than spending it on risky raw specials.
