This is a side-scrolling platformer where players control Sonic or Tails through distinct zones. The characters can run, jump, crouch, and build speed with slopes, springs, and other stage devices. Rings act as a buffer against damage, and stages must be cleared within the time limit by reaching the goal or defeating the boss. Depending on version and progression, special stages may appear to award Chaos Emeralds and affect the ending.
