The game uses a 2D side-scrolling perspective and is structured around mission-based progression, playable solo or in two-player co-op. Players run, jump, shoot, throw grenades, and occasionally pilot the Metal Slug vehicle. Weapons such as the Heavy Machine Gun, Flame Shot, Shotgun, and Laser Gun can be picked up, while rescued prisoners provide bonuses and supplies. Since most attacks kill on contact or in a single hit, learning enemy placements and boss patterns is essential.

Marco Rossi

One of the two playable Peregrine Falcon Squad soldiers and a central hero of the first game.

Tarma Roving

The other playable protagonist, known for his driving skill and mechanical expertise.

General Morden

Leader of the rebel army and the main antagonist of the game.

Memorize enemy spawn points and keep the Metal Slug alive for boss fights whenever possible. Grenades are extremely effective against clustered troops and large targets, so use them deliberately. Rescue prisoners whenever it is safe, as they often reward weapons, bombs, or score items. During boss encounters, focus first on reading attack cycles and maintaining safe positioning rather than forcing damage. In co-op, avoid stacking on the same spot to reduce the risk of both players being hit at once.

The Shotgun deals massive close-range damage and can melt durable enemies quickly.

Tips

Even inside the tank, watch for heavy fire and melee attackers; the vehicle is not invincible.
