Samus explores the connected areas of Zebes from a side-scrolling perspective. The main objectives are to find the Morphing Ball, bombs, missiles, energy tanks, Varia Suit, Ice Beam, and other upgrades; defeat Kraid and Ridley; and reach Mother Brain in Tourian. Rooms are linked through doors, elevators, hidden blocks, and passages that require specific abilities. Samus can run, jump, shoot, crouch, roll into a ball, place bombs, and fire missiles. The player must revisit earlier rooms after gaining new equipment, while energy and missile capacity determine how long Samus can survive and which barriers she can remove. A two-player mode alternates control after each life rather than displaying both players simultaneously.

Characters
Samus Aran
A bounty hunter in power armor who investigates the Space Pirate operation on Zebes.
Mother Brain
The central enemy intelligence located in Tourian and the final boss.
Kraid
A large Space Pirate leader and one of the two major bosses guarding access through Zebes.
Ridley
A Space Pirate commander and major boss stationed in Norfair.
Metroid
A floating life-form exploited by the Space Pirates and vulnerable to missiles after being frozen by the Ice Beam.
Strategy
Map the connections between Brinstar, Norfair, and the other Zebes regions instead of treating each room as a separate stage. Bomb suspicious floors and walls, and return to previously visited rooms whenever a new upgrade opens a route. Collect Energy Tanks and missile expansions before attempting Tourian. The Ice Beam is essential for handling Metroids, while missiles are needed for many doors, enemies, and bosses. Against Kraid and Ridley, enter with full energy and missiles, keep moving, and use the room layout to avoid contact damage.
