Final Fantasy IV on Bandai WonderSwan is an enhanced port of Square's classic JRPG, developed with support from TOSE. Centered on dark knight Cecil's path to redemption, it blends fantasy warfare, lunar mythology, and character-driven drama. The game is especially famous for helping popularize the Active Time Battle system and is widely regarded as a major milestone in the series' storytelling evolution.

The game uses an overhead perspective for towns, dungeons, and the world map, while battles use a command-based Active Time Battle system where actions become available as gauges fill. Party members rotate with the story, each with fixed jobs and distinct abilities such as black magic, white magic, jump, and summons. Progress comes through story events and dungeon clears, with constant attention to equipment, status effects, elemental weaknesses, and resource management.

Cecil Harvey

The main protagonist, originally a dark knight captain of Baron who begins a journey of doubt, change, and redemption.

Rosa Farrell

A white mage and Cecil's steadfast companion, providing vital healing and emotional support.

Kain Highwind

A dragoon from Baron and Cecil's close friend, torn by loyalty, jealousy, and inner conflict.

Rydia

A young summoner whose command over eidolons makes her one of the party's most memorable allies.

Tellah

An aged sage with powerful magic who plays a crucial role in the story's turning points.

Upgrade armor and weapons regularly in the early game, and note that Cecil becomes much sturdier after his class change. Use group-targeting spells to clear random encounters efficiently, then save MP for bosses where elemental weaknesses matter more. Kain's Jump can avoid certain attacks, while Rosa should focus on healing and status recovery. Before entering major dungeons, stock up on recovery items and keep multiple save files around key story branches.

Because the active party changes with the story, avoid overinvesting in characters who may leave temporarily.

Tips

Against heavy-hitting bosses, prioritize healing stability over aggressive damage races.

Tips

Talk to townspeople often, as many NPCs hint at your next destination or dungeon objective.

User Reviews

Its emotional story and character arcs still make it one of the defining early Final Fantasy games.

User Reviews

The ATB system keeps battles lively, and the WonderSwan version remains a respectable portable adaptation.
