The game uses a behind-the-kart third-person racing view, with players steering Mario series characters through drift-heavy tracks while using item boxes to attack rivals and gain speed. Amped Up adds 12 new courses and a special N64 Coin Mode in which collecting all eight coins on a course awards a Star power-up, and each coin also increases top speed. The title screen options menu includes multiple gameplay and presentation settings.
