Final Fantasy for WonderSwan is Square's 2000 handheld remake of the original 1987 Famicom/NES game. It is a turn-based Japanese role-playing game about four Warriors of Light traveling to restore the elemental Crystals. This version updates the visuals and interface while keeping the core structure and story intact, making the foundational entry more accessible on portable hardware. It is often remembered as one of the stronger early remakes of a landmark RPG.

The game uses top-down exploration across towns, overworld routes, and dungeons. At the beginning, players create a four-member party by choosing character classes, then gain experience and gil through battles. Combat is menu-driven and turn-based, with commands such as attack, magic, and items resolving according to battle order. Progression revolves around crystal-related objectives, dungeon clears, vehicles like the airship, and a later class upgrade that strengthens the party for the second half of the journey.

Warriors of Light

The player's four heroes, chosen by prophecy to restore the light of the four Crystals.

Princess Sarah

The princess of Cornelia, whose kidnapping drives the opening quest.

Garland

A major antagonist tied to both the beginning of the adventure and the story's central time-loop structure.

A balanced opening party works best, ideally with a durable front-line fighter and both white and black magic support. Early on, spend money on healing items and basic armor before chasing expensive weapons. While exploring dungeons, save valuable spell charges for bosses and focus fire dangerous enemies to reduce incoming damage. After the class upgrade, revisit shops for stronger gear and spells, since the late-game dungeons become much more demanding.
