Ys: The Vanished Omens is the first game in Falcom's legendary Ys series, later ported to the Sega Master System. Players control Adol Christin, a red-haired swordsman investigating the fate of the six priests of Ys in a ruined fantasy land. It is best known for its distinctive bump combat, brisk exploration, and memorable atmosphere, and it helped define action RPG design on 8-bit consoles.

The game uses a top-down action RPG structure with towns, field areas, and labyrinthine dungeons. Instead of a separate attack button, combat is built around bumping into enemies at the correct angle and timing, making positioning and momentum essential. Adol gains experience from battles and grows stronger through level ups, while weapons, armor, and items provide steady progression. Exploration involves talking to NPCs, finding keys and hidden paths, and backtracking through dungeons as new routes open. Combat, navigation, and resource management all work together to drive progress.

Adol Christin

The red-haired protagonist who travels to Ys to uncover the truth behind the missing priests.

Lilia

A key supporting character connected to the mystery of Ys and Adol's investigation.

Dogi

A straightforward adventurer who assists Adol and appears in the unfolding story.

Leveling early makes the game much easier, so spend time grinding in safer outer areas before pushing deeper. In combat, approach enemies from slight angles rather than head-on to reduce risk and improve consistency. Upgrade equipment whenever possible, since defense matters a lot in this system. Search every corner of dungeons for hidden passages, and keep enough healing items on hand before entering new areas.
