Players control X through side-scrolling stages, jumping, climbing walls, dashing, and firing the X-Buster. Each stage ends with a boss that grants a special weapon, and those weapons interact through a weakness system. Most stages can be cleared in any order, and finishing them opens the final stage sequence. Hidden Heart Tanks, armor parts, and other upgrades increase survivability and offensive options, while wall jumps and dashing are essential for movement and defense.

X

The protagonist, an advanced Reploid who fights with the X-Buster.

Zero

X's ally and mentor-like partner, known for his close-range combat style.

Sigma

Leader of the Maverick forces and the main antagonist.

Collect Heart Tanks and armor parts as early as possible to make later bosses much easier. Learn each boss pattern before committing to aggressive attacks, and use weakness weapons whenever they are available. If you do not yet have the optimal weapon, charge shots and wall jumps can keep you safe while dealing steady damage. Mastering dash momentum and wall climbing is key to exploration and survivability.
