Developed by Sensible Software and published by Virgin Interactive, Cannon Fodder blends top-down shooting with squad-based tactics. Players lead a small team through a series of missions, balancing movement, gunfire, and positioning under constant pressure. Its dark humor, anti-war tone, and permanent-death system made it a memorable 16-bit release, with fallen soldiers marked on a hillside graveyard.

The game uses a top-down, mission-based structure. You control a squad through forests, camps, bases, and enemy strongholds, moving with the directional controls and attacking with firearms and throwable weapons. Soldiers can be switched individually, allowing you to scout, cover angles, and manage firefights one person at a time. Death is permanent, so every loss matters. Most stages have clear objectives such as eliminating enemies, destroying targets, or advancing to an extraction point, and completed missions lead to the next assignment with fresh recruits.

Squad Leader

The player’s command focus, used to direct the team and choose movement routes.

Soldiers

Individual squad members who can be controlled separately and are lost permanently if killed.

Keep your squad grouped and avoid sending anyone alone into open ground. Advance slowly using trees, rocks, and buildings as cover, and clear visible enemies before moving forward. When fire becomes heavy, switch to a single soldier to draw attention while the others support from safer angles. Save explosives for fortified positions or high-priority targets.
