The game uses a top-down exploration style with menu-driven turn-based battles. Players guide Bartz and his party through towns, dungeons, and multiple world maps while advancing the story. Its signature Job System awards Ability Points after battle, raising job levels and unlocking skills that can be equipped on other jobs. As the adventure progresses, more jobs, vehicles, secret areas, and endgame challenges become available, encouraging experimentation and party planning.

Bartz Klauser

The main protagonist, a free-spirited traveler drawn into the crisis surrounding the crystals.

Lenna Charlotte Tycoon

Princess of Tycoon, who begins the journey while investigating the Wind Crystal's disturbance.

Galuf Doe

An elderly warrior with amnesia whose past is tied to the larger threat facing the world.

Faris Scherwiz

A pirate captain and fierce fighter whose hidden identity is central to the story.

Krile Mayer Baldesion

A young girl who can communicate with moogles and later becomes a key party member.

Exdeath

The primary antagonist, a powerful sorcerer seeking control over the Void.

Early on, build around White Mage, Black Mage, and Knight for healing, offense, and stability. Level jobs broadly rather than locking characters into one role, since powerful passives like Dual Wield, White Magic, and Time Magic become much stronger when combined with other jobs. For tougher bosses, check elemental weaknesses and status vulnerabilities, and make use of Slow, Silence, Blink, and summons when appropriate. Before the final areas, spend time mastering useful support abilities and reliable revival options.
